Free Digital Photo Software

There are a lot of free digital photo software titles available online to help photographers edit and organize our photos. From simple web based photo editors to complex standalone editing software packages there are plenty of choices and some great software available to digital photographers at no cost.

Some digital photo software is totally free or is shareware while others offer a reduced version for free which can usually be ungraded for a very reasonable fee to a premium version that adds extra functions or tools.

On this page you will find a brief overview on several of the different Web-page based free digital photo software applications. These are considered to be web-based because they operate over the internet rather than requiring you to download and install the software.

If you are interested in free digital photo software check back often as I will be adding additional software as I become aware of it. Also to come will be more in-depth reviews and tutorials covering some of these software titles.

Web-page Based Editors

The free digital photo software covered on this page are web-based. You can use them from almost any browser without downloading or installing a program.

While web-based editors are generally simpler to use some of these have some very good editing features and would be all that many photographers need.

FotoFlexerFotoFlexer--Is another powerful free digital photo software editor. No registration is required so you can quickly be uploading and editing your photos in a very short time.

Like Picnik and other online editors FotoFlexer allows you to upload photos either directly from your computer or you can import photos from online storage places such as Flicker, Picasa web albums, Photobucket, Facebook, Myspace, etc.

FotoFlexer loads quickly and has a fairly robust array of tools. Some of the advanced tools that are only available on Picnik under its Premium paid plan such the curves tool are free on FotoFlexer although overall  FotoFlexer does not have the number of tools and enhancements that are available to premium Picnik users. With no registration required and no cost to use I recommend that you give it a try and see what you can do.

SplashupSplashup--is another online photo editor that you can try out without any registration but you will be limited to uploading images from your computer as the ability to import images from Picasa, Facebook or other supported sites is only available after registration.

Splashup has more of a typical "photo editor" look and feel to it. It allows you to use layers, add text or objects, crop, rotate, etc. While the features it has work well it lacks some of the advanced photo enhancement features available in either Picnik or Fotoflexer and its layout and controls are not as intuitive either.

If you are familiar with Photoshop or other similar desktop applications then using Splashup would not be any problem but a complete novice might find it a little harder to use than Picnik or Fotoflexer.

Depending on what you want to do Splashup might be a good option for you but again it lacks the ability to do special enchantments such as curves adjustments or the adding of a frame that are found in some of the other free digital photo software that is available online.

Photoshop.comPhotoshop.com--Is Adobe's free online photo editor. Like most of the others you can jump right in and upload and edit a photo without any registration but to take advantage of the online photo organizer you must have an Adobe user account.

As one would expect from Adobe this editor does a great job with the limited number of tools that are available in it. It makes it very easy to make some basic adjustments to your photos or add a few additional elements such as text, stickies, clip art and even a few decorative frames.

One might consider this to be sort of Photoshop Elements lite, lite, lite version. Making some quick adjustments to your image like changing the hue, cropping and resizing all work quickly and easily but they are limited in many ways. This program also limits the size you can save your photo with the maximum resolution of 800 x 535.

While I like some of the editing capabilities of this program especially its ability to quickly change the hue or color of a photo (this works great on sunset or sunrise pictures that you want to change the look of) overall it is pretty limited compared to some of the others and seems to take longer to load as well. I would still recommend you try it out and see how it works for you. After all the price is right...free!

The photograph itself doesn't interest me.  I want only to capture a minute part of reality.
